Overview
A second opinion is not a sign of doubt — it is a sign of due diligence. For complex congenital heart disease, a fresh perspective from an experienced ACHD or pediatric cardiology specialist can confirm a diagnosis, reveal alternative treatment options, or provide the reassurance needed to move forward with confidence.
When to Seek a Second Opinion
A second opinion is especially valuable when facing a new diagnosis of complex CHD, when surgery or intervention has been recommended, when there is diagnostic uncertainty, or when a patient or family feels that their concerns are not being fully addressed. It is also appropriate when transitioning from pediatric to adult care or when evaluating the need for advanced therapies like transplantation.
What We Review
Our second-opinion consultations include a thorough review of all available records — operative notes, imaging studies (echocardiograms, cardiac MRIs, catheterization reports), laboratory data, and medication lists. We re-interpret imaging when possible and provide a detailed written summary of our findings, diagnostic impressions, and recommendations.
Virtual & In-Person Options
Second opinions are available both in person and via secure telemedicine. Virtual consultations allow patients from any geographic location to access subspecialty expertise without the burden of travel. For complex cases requiring hands-on evaluation, we coordinate in-person visits with same-day imaging when possible to minimize patient burden.
Collaborative, Not Competitive
We approach every second opinion with respect for the referring team and a commitment to collaboration. Our goal is not to replace the existing care team but to add value through an independent expert perspective. We communicate findings directly to the referring provider (with patient consent) and support a seamless return to the primary care relationship.
