Many congenital heart defects can now be treated in the catheterization lab, using small tubes placed through veins instead of open-heart surgery. Examples include closing atrial and ventricular septal defects, stenting narrowed vessels, and placing certain valves by catheter.
Children who need interventional procedures are cared for by a team that includes pediatric cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, congenital heart surgeons, and anesthesiologists in a specialized center. We help families understand when an interventional procedure is recommended and coordinate referrals to the appropriate regional congenital heart program.
