Child Chest Pain, Palpitations, or Fainting

When symptoms should be evaluated by a pediatric cardiologist.

    Symptoms That Deserve Careful Review

Chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, and fainting are common reasons children are referred to pediatric cardiology. Many causes are benign, but symptoms during exercise, symptoms with a family history of sudden cardiac death, abnormal ECG findings, or episodes with collapse should be evaluated carefully.

    What the Evaluation May Include

A pediatric cardiology evaluation may include a detailed symptom history, family history review, physical examination, ECG, echocardiogram, exercise testing, or ambulatory rhythm monitoring. The goal is to identify children who need treatment or activity guidance while reassuring families when the heart is structurally and electrically normal.
